Structure of Voter ID

  • The Voter ID card (also known as EPIC – Election Photo Identity Card) is an official identity document issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI). It is not only proof of being a registered voter but also serves as a valid identity card for various purposes.

    A standard Indian Voter ID card contains the following details:

    1. Unique Serial Number (EPIC Number) – A distinctive alphanumeric code allotted to each voter for easy identification.

    2. Photograph of the Cardholder – A passport-size photo that helps in verifying the voter’s identity during elections.

    3. Hologram – A security feature containing the state or national symbol to prevent duplication or fraud.

    4. Full Name of the Voter – The officially registered name of the cardholder.

    5. Father’s or Guardian’s Name – Additional identity verification detail included on the card.

    6. Gender of the Voter – Marked as Male, Female, or Other.

    7. Date of Birth or Age – Helps in determining the eligibility of the voter (minimum age requirement: 18 years).

How to Apply for Voter ID Card Online

Step 1: Visit the National Voters’ Services Portal (NVSP) official website.

Step 2: On the homepage, click on the “Sign Up” button available at the top right corner.

Step 3: Enter your mobile number, email ID, and the captcha code. Then click “Continue.”

Step 4: Provide your first name, last name, create a password, confirm it, and then select “Request OTP.”

Step 5: Type in the OTP (sent to your mobile and email) and press “Verify.”

Step 6: After successful verification, go to the “Login” page. Enter your registered mobile number, password, captcha, and request a new OTP.

Step 7: Enter the OTP received and click on “Verify & Login.”

Step 8: Once logged in, choose “Form 6 – New Registration for General Electors.”

Step 9: Fill in the form with your personal details such as name, date of birth, gender, Aadhaar number, family details, contact information, and address. Upload the required supporting documents, then click “Preview and Submit.”

Step 10: Review your details carefully. If everything looks correct, click “Submit.” Your application will be sent for processing, and you can track its status online.

How to Apply for Voter ID Card Offline

Step 1: Go to your nearest State Election Office and ask for Form 6 (Application for new voter registration).

Step 2: Carefully fill out Form 6 with your personal details such as name, date of birth, gender, address, and family information.

Step 3: Attach your passport-sized photograph and the necessary supporting documents (such as proof of age and proof of residence). Submit the completed form at the Election Office.
